The Today Show host has a new bundle of joy to thank for motivating him to stay healthy.
This year, Roker has a lot to be thankful for, including his much-improved health and a new family member who keeps him motivated.
It’s been over a year since the veteran Today Show host, 69, was admitted to the hospital after battling blood clots that went to his lungs, necessitating multiple surgeries and a lengthy recuperation.
Things have surely improved since then. The popular weatherman is fully recovered, and he celebrated the birth of his first granddaughter, Sky Clara, with his daughter Courtney and her husband Wes Laga earlier this year.
Al told fans earlier this week on Entertainment Tonight, “I’m doing great, doing great.”
Then he revealed endearingly, “I tell you, the thing that’s kept me going is I’ve had a new granddaughter.”
“You could love up on ’em and then you give them back,” he said of his new job as a grandfather, adding, “If I had known they were this much fun, I would’ve had them first.” It’s fantastic.”
Furthermore, Sky Clara is already making her grandfather proud, as her parents dressed her up like a cloud for her first Halloween, appropriately reflecting her grandfather’s long-running career as NBC’s star meteorologist. “It’s very sweet, so [I’m] very excited,” the proud grandfather exclaimed.
Al recently spent his first weekend by himself caring for the newborn, and he was pleased to report to his fans that everything went well.
He captioned a series of cute Instagram images of his cuddling and scenic walks with Sky, “The perfect weekend.” “Thank you to @ouichefroker and @thatteacherwhodjs for letting me babysit my little Sky Clara over the weekend,” she says, adding, “I forgot how difficult it is to care for a 3+ month old on your own.” I went 24 hours without taking a shower. Whew.”
In a later post, he joked, “It’s been a while since I had this setup going on in the kitchen.” It’s good to know I can still do it. It’s similar to riding a bike. But I get to return the bike to its rightful owners.”
