I was sitting in my backyard on a beautiful afternoon, looking out at our hot tub.

Tom and I bought our dream home a few years ago, and it included a beautiful backyard and a hot tub.

Back then, we were overjoyed as we anticipated all the tranquil evenings we’d spend basking in the warm bubbles.

We were conscious of our neighbors, despite the distance. Emma and Jake, Jim and Lisa’s teenage children, lived next door. We never got to know them well, but they seemed kind enough.

Typically, especially on weekends, Tom and I would spend a lot of time in the hot tub. However, things were not the same this year.

My new job required a lot of travel, and Tom was working extra hours to cover for a colleague who was away due to sickness. We seemed to be always busy, and it appeared that we had been ignoring our hot tub for several months.

I smiled, feeling slightly more optimistic. For a brief period of time, things may return to normal.

But one afternoon, our neighbor Lisa came over before we could use the hot tub again.

“Charlotte, may we have a little conversation?” She inquired, looking a little embarrassed.

Yes, Lisa. “What is going on?” Curious to hear what she had to say, I responded.

“I hate to say it, but could Tom and you please keep it down on the weekends in the evenings?” Lisa looked down at her feet and whispered. “Last Sunday, there was loud music and shouting coming from your backyard. I realize I haven’t spoken anything in a long time, but it will shortly be a year. The loudness irritates me so badly.

I was startled and locked my gaze on her. However, Lisa, Tom, and I were not in the city on Sunday. Not that we were present. We spend almost every weekend out.

One evening, while Tom and I were relaxing in our hot tub, I smiled as I looked out at our peaceful backyard. I told Tom that we had succeeded. “Our house is back.”

Tom shook my hand and nodded. In the process, we strengthened our community. I am so proud of us.

It was a difficult lesson in trust and prudence, but it strengthened and bonded us all. I was quite grateful for that.
