While most of us can live without some creepy crawlies, we are all guaranteed to come across bugs of one kind or another in the house at some point during the year.

If you live in a rural region, you probably already know that during the summer and beyond, flies, ants, spiders, and other such insects will try to live, or at least take up residence, in your home.

The annual invasion of bugs doesn’t bother some people, while others are less, let’s say, accepting of the concept. I can tolerate spiders creating webs in my crevices, and an occasional fly buzzing around the kitchen won’t likely ruin my day.

I take exception, however, to earwigs…

Even if you weren’t aware of it, you have undoubtedly encountered earwigs in your house at some point. These tiny insects are actually about as uncute as it gets, but despite their appearance and potential for painful bites or stings, they are perfectly safe.

Having saying that, most people dislike having a swarm of earwigs scampering around their home. I know I do, which is why I found this one trick to be very helpful in handling them.

I believe there may be others who would be interested in reading about Facebook user Alicia Alexander’s tried-and-true process for getting rid of an earwig issue.

Alicia says the best way to catch earwigs is to put a shallow dish outside on your deck or in your lawn filled with half a cup of olive oil.

According to reports, the image below depicts the number of earwigs that Alicia had managed to gather in less than a day:

And here’s that same bowl after 36 hours…

Earwigs are apparently attracted to the sweetness of the olive oil, but once they climb into the bowl, they’re unable to clamber out again. If you’re living with an earwig infestation, this could prove the ideal solution!

What they mean

Far be it from us to put you in a state of panic, but the presence of unusual amounts of earwigs in your home could indicate problems with rotting wood. Earwigs are among the plethora of insects that are attracted to wood rot, so be sure to check any wooden structures you have at home.

That said, earwigs seeking warmer conditions inside your house isn’t anything to be alarmed about. It’s completely normal, and their presence is highly unlikely to affect you in any way.
