I’m Positive You Will Not Know What This Is

Kids today would look at a VHS tape, a landline phone, and a walkman and have no idea what they were. Growing up during a technological boom, it was remarkable to watch how basic household items that had been in use for years became obsolete in the blink of an eye.

I’ll admit that when I first saw a photograph of the object below, I had no idea what it was. I knew it was a metal tool, but I had no idea what else it was. Do you remember or identify this object?

Looks familiar? It is an ancient oil can opening spout! Although this object appears to be prehistoric, it was actually created in the 1980s. Back then, individuals would use the tool to punch a hole in the top of the can, and the spout was used to pour oil. Despite its modest appearance, this gadget is quite clever.

When I think of the 1980s, it feels like yesterday. It’s incredible to realize that the 1980s were more than 40 years ago. Though these openers are no longer regularly utilized, I’m willing to guess that many folks still have one in their garage with their equipment. Of course, people (particularly mechanics) collect them. So, if you ever find yourself at a yard sale or antique store and run across one of these handy little gadgets, it might not be a bad idea to buy one.
