(VIDEO) The Coach Did This To Teach His Players A Lesson After His Players Disrespected the National Anthem
Buzz Williams, Virginia Tech’s head men’s basketball coach, starts each season by teaching in his players a respect for the national anthem and the veterans who have served and lost their lives in defense of our great country.
Before delivering his lesson, Coach Williams highlighted a few little motions made by players, such as staring at their shoes, swaying back and forth, or tugging on their jerseys or shorts.
To emphasize his point, Buzz summoned other veterans, some of whom were dressed in uniform.
Williams forced his teammates face the veterans as he delivered a passionate statement that began, “We didn’t earn those chairs.” You didn’t acquire those chairs based on your height, speed, or shooting abilities.
“We draw up the play, we recruit real hard, but I didn’t earn the chair.”
Williams gestured to the veterans and said, “These guys, when they were your age, they interrupted their lives.” They paused their education. They changed their careers and sacrificed their lives for those chairs.”
“So, when the anthem plays, we’re going to stand like grown men and commemorate heroes like this who gave their lives so that we might have a seat to sit in. And for the two and a half minutes that the song, or someone sings it, or the music plays, we will stand at attention in honor of these guys. We are not going to sway back and forth, nor are we going to meddle with our shorts or jersey.”
“Those two and a half minutes will be given to those who earned these chairs because freedom allows us to accomplish what we do.
If you monitor your teammates the next time they’re in uniform during the national anthem, you might notice some of the same acts that Williams objected to.
Although it is unlikely that players are doing this out of disrespect, Williams skillfully used the scenario to teach his squad a vital lesson.
Coaches who start every sporting event with the national anthem should discuss the results.
