Last Friday, Indian elephants conducted a funeral ceremony like a human funeral for a newborn elephant. The video was shared by Parveen Kaswan, an Indian Foreign Service forest ranger.

As shocked social media users came to express their awe and concern for the elephants, Kawan’s video went viral.
In the video, which was shared on Twitter, an elephant can be seen emerging from some bushes while carrying a deceased baby elephant’s trunk.

The mature elephant positioned its body to protect it as it awaited the arrival of further elephants. Additional elephants approached and around the baby elephant, marching in a line like to a funeral procession.
Then, with other elephants trailing after, the original elephant raised the infant once more.

On Twitter, the message received more than 12,000 likes and more than 5,000 retweets.

Elephants have been known to grieve over their deceased, much as humans do.
