Why You Absolutely Should Be Putting Salt on Your Watermelon

Watermelon is perhaps the best fruit of the summer, in terms of deliciousness. On a sweltering summer day, nothing is more cool and refreshing than a slice of fresh watermelon. We had no idea, though, that adding salt is a really easy method that improves the flavor of watermelon while simultaneously increasing its health advantages.

Watermelon With Salt? Why it Works

You’re not the only one who finds this to sound a little strange. When I initially learned about this trick, my thoughts were exactly the same. However, after researching it and testing it out for myself, this odd suggestion has a lot of merit.

Although salt-sprinkling watermelon is customarily associated with the South, I can now understand why it’s becoming more and more popular across the nation. A slice of fresh watermelon is naturally sweet, but the contrast of salty flavor somehow intensifies the sweetness.

However, what’s truly fascinating is how the fruit’s entire texture is altered by the salt. A tiny pinch of salt really makes the juice from a slice of watermelon rise to the top, adding even more sweetness and juice! To further appreciate this improvement, salt a piece of watermelon and set it alone for a few minutes.

It also offers certain health advantages. Sodium, or salt, is a naturally occurring electrolyte. Electrolytes support the body’s fluid balance and help you keep hydrated. Therefore, a little salt added to watermelon will actually make it more hydrated.

How to Eat Watermelon With Salt

Now that you’re convinced, all you’ll need is a pinch of salt. Start off with the smallest amount possible, and add more as desired. I used coarse Himalayan pink salt for mine. All you have to do is sprinkle the salt on top of your watermelon slice, let it sit for a few minutes, and enjoy!

You can also get even more creative. To make a super indulgent treat, drizzle your salted watermelon with a little bit of honey. You could also squeeze some fresh lime juice onto your salted watermelon for a kick of citrus flavor.

So there you have it. Even though watermelon is delicious on its own, simple culinary hacks like this one can really enhance all that this summer fruit has to offer. We think you’ll be thrilled with the results.
